Caymus

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Caymus Vineyards is a vineyard and winery located in Rutherford, California, within the renowned Napa Valley wine region of the United States. Founded in 1972 by the Wagner family, Caymus Vineyards has established itself as a producer of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon, a red wine grape variety that is celebrated for its depth of flavor and aging potential. The winery is best known for its Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, the only wine to have been awarded "Wine of the Year" by Wine Spectator magazine twice.

History[edit | edit source]

Caymus Vineyards was established by Charles F. (Charlie) Wagner, his wife Lorna Belle Glos Wagner, and their son Chuck Wagner. The family had been farming in Napa Valley since the mid-19th century, but it was not until 1972 that they decided to focus on producing high-quality wines. The name "Caymus" comes from the Mexican land grant known as Rancho Caymus, from which the Wagner family's land was purchased.

Wines[edit | edit source]

Caymus Vineyards specializes in Cabernet Sauvignon, producing two labels: the Caymus Napa Valley and the Caymus Special Selection. The latter is made from the best barrels of the vintage and is known for its rich texture, complex flavors, and potential to age gracefully. In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, Caymus also produces a small amount of Zinfandel and other varietal wines.

Viticulture and Winemaking[edit | edit source]

Caymus Vineyards employs both traditional and modern viticultural practices. The vineyard management focuses on techniques that maximize grape quality, such as careful canopy management and controlled irrigation. In the winery, a combination of traditional winemaking techniques, such as natural yeast fermentation and aging in oak barrels, is used alongside modern technology to ensure the highest quality wine production.

Awards and Recognition[edit | edit source]

Caymus Vineyards' wines have received numerous accolades and high ratings from wine critics and publications. The Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon has been particularly celebrated, receiving the prestigious "Wine of the Year" award from Wine Spectator magazine in 1984 and again in 1990.

Visiting Caymus Vineyards[edit | edit source]

Caymus Vineyards offers tastings and tours by appointment, providing wine enthusiasts with the opportunity to experience their wines and learn about the winemaking process firsthand. The winery's picturesque location in Napa Valley, coupled with its reputation for exceptional wines, makes it a popular destination for both tourists and wine connoisseurs.

Sustainability[edit | edit source]

Caymus Vineyards is committed to sustainable winemaking practices. The winery focuses on water conservation, energy efficiency, and environmentally friendly farming practices to minimize its impact on the surrounding ecosystem.
