Cecil O. Samuelson (born August 1, 1941) is an American physician and educator who served as the 12th president of Brigham Young University (BYU) from 2003 to 2014. He is also a general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Samuelson was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended the University of Utah, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1966 and a medical degree in 1970. He completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Utah Hospital.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
Samuelson worked as a physician specializing in rheumatology and held various academic and administrative positions at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He served as the dean of the School of Medicine and later as the vice president of health sciences at the University of Utah.
Church Service[edit | edit source]
In 1994, Samuelson was called as a general authority of the LDS Church, serving in the Second Quorum of the Seventy. He was later transferred to the First Quorum of the Seventy in 2001. During his time as a general authority, he held various leadership roles within the church.
Presidency of Brigham Young University[edit | edit source]
In 2003, Samuelson was appointed as the president of Brigham Young University, succeeding Merrill J. Bateman. During his tenure, he focused on enhancing the academic reputation of the university, improving campus facilities, and promoting the integration of faith and learning. He served as president until 2014, when he was succeeded by Kevin J Worthen.

Samuelson is married to Sharon Giauque, and they have five children. He is known for his commitment to education, medicine, and his faith.
