Cefotaxime sodium

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Cefotaxime Sodium is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, widely used in the treatment of bacterial infections. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

Cefotaxime Sodium is the sodium salt form of cefotaxime, a beta-lactam, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity. Cefotaxime sodium binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Cefotaxime Sodium works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death. It is highly resistant to a broad spectrum of beta-lactamases and provides coverage against most Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Cefotaxime Sodium is used to treat a variety of conditions such as lower respiratory tract infections, skin and skin structure infections, urinary tract infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, bacterial septicemia, bone and joint infections, and meningitis. It is also used for surgical prophylaxis.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Cefotaxime Sodium include rash, diarrhea, nausea, and pain at the injection site. Serious side effects may include allergic reactions, seizures, and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Patients with a history of allergic reaction to penicillin or other cephalosporins should avoid using Cefotaxime Sodium. It should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment.

Dosage[edit | edit source]

The dosage of Cefotaxime Sodium varies depending on the type and severity of the infection, patient age, and renal function. It is typically administered intravenously or intramuscularly.
