Cephas L. Bard, MD

Cephas Little Bard (April 7, 1843 – April 20, 1902) was an American physician and pioneer in the field of medicine in California. He is best known for his contributions to the medical community in Ventura County and for founding the first hospital in the region.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Cephas L. Bard was born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He pursued his medical education at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1864. Following his graduation, Bard served as a surgeon during the American Civil War.

After the war, Bard moved to Ventura, California in 1868. He quickly became a prominent figure in the local medical community. In 1873, Bard founded the first hospital in Ventura County, known as the Elizabeth Bard Memorial Hospital, named in honor of his mother. This hospital was instrumental in providing medical care to the residents of Ventura and the surrounding areas.

Bard was also known for his work in public health and his efforts to combat infectious diseases. He played a key role in managing outbreaks of diseases such as smallpox and tuberculosis in the region.
