The first mention of Chénens dates back to the year 1142 under the name Chenens. The area has a rich history, with evidence of settlements dating back to the Roman era.

Chénens covers an area of 4.3 square kilometers. It is situated in the Swiss Plateau, a region known for its fertile land and scenic landscapes. The municipality is bordered by the municipalities of Autigny, La Brillaz, La Folliaz, and Villorsonnens.
