Changdev was a legendary yogi and spiritual figure in Indian history, known for his association with the saint Dnyaneshwar. He is often depicted in stories as a powerful yogi who lived for over a thousand years through his mastery of yoga and tantra.
Historical Context[edit | edit source]
Changdev is believed to have lived during the 12th and 13th centuries in India. He is often associated with the Nath tradition, a sect of yogis who practiced Hatha Yoga and were known for their spiritual powers and longevity. The Nath tradition has a rich history in India, with its roots tracing back to the teachings of Matsyendranath and Gorakhnath.
Legend of Changdev and Dnyaneshwar[edit | edit source]
One of the most famous stories involving Changdev is his encounter with the young saint Dnyaneshwar, a revered figure in the Bhakti movement and the author of the Dnyaneshwari, a commentary on the Bhagavad Gita.
According to legend, Changdev, who was proud of his spiritual accomplishments and long life, heard about the young Dnyaneshwar and decided to test him. Changdev sent a blank piece of paper to Dnyaneshwar as a challenge, expecting him to respond with a demonstration of his knowledge and spiritual power.
In response, Dnyaneshwar wrote a profound philosophical treatise on the paper, which later became known as the "Changdev Pasashti," a collection of 65 verses. Impressed by Dnyaneshwar's wisdom, Changdev decided to visit him in person.
The story goes that Changdev, riding on a tiger and using a serpent as a whip, approached Dnyaneshwar and his siblings. In a display of humility and spiritual insight, Dnyaneshwar and his siblings sat on a wall, which then moved towards Changdev. This miraculous event is said to have humbled Changdev, leading him to become a disciple of Dnyaneshwar.
Teachings and Influence[edit | edit source]
Changdev is often remembered for his transformation from a proud yogi to a humble seeker of truth. His story is a testament to the power of humility and the importance of seeking true wisdom over mere displays of power.
The encounter between Changdev and Dnyaneshwar is celebrated in Maharashtra and is an integral part of the region's spiritual folklore. It highlights the values of the Bhakti movement, which emphasized devotion, humility, and the pursuit of spiritual knowledge.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Changdev's legacy is preserved in the stories and teachings that have been passed down through generations. He is often cited as an example of the transformative power of true spiritual insight and the importance of humility in the pursuit of enlightenment.
