Charles R. Ellet

Charles Rivers Ellet (1 June 1843 – 29 October 1863) was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was a member of the prominent Ellet family, known for their contributions to military engineering and naval warfare.

Charles R. Ellet was born on June 1, 1843, into the distinguished Ellet family. His father, Charles Ellet Jr., was a civil engineer and a pioneer in the construction of suspension bridges. His uncle, Alfred W. Ellet, also served as a brigadier general in the Union Army.

Military Career[edit | edit source]

Charles R. Ellet joined the Union Army during the American Civil War, following in the footsteps of his father and uncle. He served as a colonel in the United States Ram Fleet, a unique naval unit that utilized steam-powered rams to combat Confederate forces on the rivers.

Battle of Memphis[edit | edit source]

One of Ellet's most notable engagements was the Battle of Memphis (1862), which took place on June 6, 1862. During this battle, the Union Ram Fleet, under the command of Charles's father, Charles Ellet Jr., successfully defeated the Confederate River Defense Fleet. Charles R. Ellet played a significant role in this victory, demonstrating his leadership and bravery.

After the Battle of Memphis, Charles R. Ellet continued to serve in the Union Army's Mississippi Marine Brigade, a unit that combined infantry, cavalry, and naval forces.
