Chester, NY
Chester is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 11,981 at the 2010 census. Chester contains a village, also called Chester. The town is named after the city of Chester in England. Chester is part of the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as the larger New York–Newark–Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area.

- Chester was first settled in the early 18th century by Europeans. The town was established in 1845 from parts of the towns of Blooming Grove, Goshen, and Monroe. The economy of the early town was based on dairy farming, but became more industrialized after the Erie Railroad arrived in 1841.
Geography[edit | edit source]
- The town of Chester is in the western part of the county, with the city of Middletown to the west. The town includes the hamlet of Sugar Loaf, which is a small community known for its arts and crafts.
