NY or New York is a state located in the Northeastern United States. It is the fourth most populous state in the U.S. and is known for its cultural, financial, and media influence both nationally and globally. The state's most populous city, New York City, serves as the financial capital of the world and is home to the United Nations Headquarters.

New York was originally inhabited by several Native American tribes before being discovered by European explorers in the 16th century. The state was named after the Duke of York when it became an English colony in 1664. New York played a pivotal role in the American Revolution and was the 11th state to join the Union in 1788.

Geography[edit | edit source]

New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, and by Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a diverse geography with the Adirondack Mountains in the north, the Hudson River flowing through the eastern part of the state, and the Great Lakes region to the west.

New York has a diverse economy with key sectors including finance, healthcare, manufacturing, and technology. The state is home to the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ, two of the world's largest stock exchanges.

New York is known for its vibrant culture and is a global hub for fashion, art, music, and cuisine. The state is home to numerous cultural institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Broadway, and the Carnegie Hall.

Education[edit | edit source]

The state has a robust education system with numerous public and private institutions. The State University of New York is the largest comprehensive system of universities, colleges, and community colleges in the United States.

Government[edit | edit source]

New York is a state in the federal system of the United States. The Governor of New York is the state's chief executive and the New York State Legislature is the state's bicameral legislature.
