Chișinău (also known as Kishinev) is the capital city and largest city of Moldova. It is the main industrial and commercial center of the country and is located in the central part of Moldova, on the Bîc River.

History[edit | edit source]

Chișinău was first mentioned in 1436 as a monastery village. It became part of the Principality of Moldavia in the 16th century. The city was under Ottoman control from the 16th to the 19th century, and later became part of the Russian Empire in 1812 following the Treaty of Bucharest. During the 19th century, Chișinău grew significantly, becoming an important administrative and commercial center.

In the 20th century, Chișinău experienced significant changes. It was part of Romania between 1918 and 1940 and again from 1941 to 1944. After World War II, it became the capital of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic within the Soviet Union. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Chișinău became the capital of independent Moldova.

Chișinău is situated in the central part of Moldova, on the banks of the Bîc River. The city covers an area of approximately 120 square kilometers. It is characterized by a continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters.
