Chi Chia-wei

Chi Chia-wei is a prominent Taiwanese LGBT rights activist known for his advocacy for same-sex marriage and LGBT rights in Taiwan. He was born on December 18, 1956, in Taiwan.

Chi Chia-wei has been a key figure in the fight for marriage equality in Taiwan. He first came to public attention in the 1980s when he publicly came out as gay, a bold move in a society where homosexuality was still largely taboo. Since then, he has been a vocal advocate for the rights of the LGBT community in Taiwan.

In 2013, Chi Chia-wei filed a constitutional challenge against Taiwan's Civil Code, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman. His case eventually led to a landmark ruling by the Constitutional Court of Taiwan in 2017, which declared that the existing marriage laws were unconstitutional and violated the rights of same-sex couples.

On May 24, 2019, Taiwan became the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, a historic moment that was largely attributed to the tireless efforts of Chi Chia-wei and other activists.

Chi Chia-wei's work has not only had a significant impact on the legal landscape in Taiwan but has also inspired LGBT rights movements across Asia. He continues to be a leading voice in the fight for equality and acceptance for the LGBT community.
