'Chilli (also spelled chili or chile), the fruit of plants from the genus Capsicum, is widely used in many cuisines around the world for its pungent flavor and is a staple ingredient in various culinary traditions. Chillies are notable for their hot taste, primarily due to the presence of a chemical compound called capsaicin, which is concentrated in the inner membranes of the fruit rather than the seeds, as commonly believed. The heat of chillies is measured on the Scoville scale, a method developed by Wilbur Scoville in 1912.
