Chloraseptic

Chloraseptic is a popular brand of oral analgesic produced by Prestige Brands that is primarily used to relieve sore throat and mouth pain. The product is available in various forms, including throat sprays, lozenges, and mouthwashes.

History[edit | edit source]

Chloraseptic was first introduced in the United States in 1957 by the pharmaceutical company Norwich Eaton Pharmaceuticals. The brand was later acquired by Prestige Brands in 2000, which continues to manufacture and distribute the product.

Active Ingredients[edit | edit source]

The primary active ingredient in most Chloraseptic products is Phenol, a mild antiseptic that helps to numb the throat and mouth tissues to relieve pain. Some Chloraseptic products also contain Benzocaine, another local anesthetic, and/or Menthol, which provides a cooling sensation and helps to soothe irritation.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Chloraseptic is primarily used to relieve pain and irritation caused by conditions such as sore throat, mouth ulcers, and minor mouth injuries. It can also be used to alleviate discomfort from dental procedures or braces. The product works by numbing the affected area and reducing inflammation and irritation.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

While generally safe for use, Chloraseptic can cause some side effects, including numbness or tingling in the mouth or throat, changes in taste, and in rare cases, allergic reactions. It is recommended to discontinue use and seek medical attention if severe or persistent side effects occur.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before using Chloraseptic, individuals should consult with a healthcare provider if they have a history of allergies to local anesthetics, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a medical condition that affects the mouth or throat. The product should not be used for more than two days without medical advice.
