Chlorofluoromethane
Chlorofluoromethane, also known as Freon-31, is a chemical compound consisting of chlorine, fluorine, and methane. It is a colorless and odorless gas at room temperature and is used primarily as a refrigerant in air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Chemical Properties[edit | edit source]
Chlorofluoromethane has the chemical formula CH2ClF. It is a volatile compound, meaning it easily changes from a liquid to a gas at room temperature. It is non-flammable and has a boiling point of -40.4 degrees Celsius.
Uses[edit | edit source]
The primary use of chlorofluoromethane is as a refrigerant in air conditioning and refrigeration systems. It is also used in the production of polyurethane foams and as a propellant in aerosol cans.
Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]
Chlorofluoromethane is a greenhouse gas and contributes to global warming. It is also a significant contributor to the depletion of the ozone layer. The production and use of chlorofluoromethane have been phased out in many countries due to its environmental impact.
Health Effects[edit | edit source]
Exposure to high levels of chlorofluoromethane can cause dizziness, confusion, and loss of consciousness. It can also cause skin and eye irritation. Long-term exposure can lead to liver and kidney damage.
Regulation[edit | edit source]
The production and use of chlorofluoromethane are regulated under the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of numerous substances that are responsible for ozone depletion.
