Chophouse

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

A chophouse is a type of restaurant that specializes in steaks and chops, which are cuts of meat sliced perpendicular to the spine, often including a rib or part of a vertebra. Chophouses originated in London in the late 17th century, serving individual portions of meat to patrons. The tradition of chophouses began as part of the expansion of the British Empire, which facilitated the importation of meat from colonies and other countries.

History[edit | edit source]

The first chophouses provided a space for businessmen to convene over hearty meals and discuss matters over food that was simple and traditionally cooked, often accompanied by ale. As the concept evolved, chophouses became popular in other parts of the world, especially in the United States where they are often referred to as "steakhouses."

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Chophouses are characterized by their focus on meat dishes, particularly steaks and chops. The menu often extends to other classic dishes such as roast beef, seafood, and a variety of side dishes, including potatoes and vegetables. The atmosphere in a chophouse is typically traditional with a hint of formality, often featuring wooden furniture, dim lighting, and a robust selection of wines and spirits.

Modern Chophouses[edit | edit source]

In contemporary times, chophouses have adapted to a variety of dining trends while maintaining their emphasis on high-quality meats. Modern chophouses may offer more diverse menus that include items catering to health-conscious diners or those with specific dietary preferences, such as vegetarian and vegan options.
