Chris Christie
Chris Christie (born September 6, 1962) is an American politician and attorney who served as the 55th Governor of New Jersey from 2010 to 2018. A member of the Republican Party, Christie gained national prominence for his leadership style and his role in the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Chris Christie was born in Newark, New Jersey, and raised in Livingston, New Jersey. He attended Livingston High School, where he was class president and played catcher for the baseball team. Christie graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1984. He then earned a Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1987.
Early Career[edit | edit source]
After law school, Christie joined a private law firm in Cranford, New Jersey, where he became a partner in 1993. He was active in local politics and served as a county freeholder (county legislator) in Morris County, New Jersey, from 1995 to 1998.
U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey[edit | edit source]
In 2002, Christie was appointed by President George W. Bush as the U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey. During his tenure, he focused on political corruption, corporate crime, and human trafficking. Christie gained a reputation for his aggressive prosecution of corrupt public officials.
Governorship[edit | edit source]
Chris Christie was elected Governor of New Jersey in 2009, defeating incumbent Jon Corzine. He was re-elected in 2013. As governor, Christie focused on pension reform, education, and economic development. He was known for his direct and sometimes confrontational style.
Hurricane Sandy[edit | edit source]
Christie's leadership during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 brought him national attention. His bipartisan approach to disaster relief and his cooperation with President Barack Obama were widely praised.
Bridgegate Scandal[edit | edit source]
In 2013, Christie faced controversy over the "Bridgegate scandal", where members of his staff were implicated in creating traffic jams on the George Washington Bridge as political retribution. Christie denied involvement, but the scandal affected his political standing.
Presidential Campaigns[edit | edit source]
Chris Christie ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. His campaign focused on his executive experience and his ability to work across party lines. Christie suspended his campaign after the New Hampshire primary and endorsed Donald Trump.
Post-Governorship[edit | edit source]
After leaving office in 2018, Christie has remained active in politics and media. He has been a political commentator and has written a book about his experiences in politics.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Chris Christie is married to Mary Pat Foster, and they have four children. The family resides in Mendham Township, New Jersey.
