Christopher Hyatt
Christopher Hyatt was an American occultist, author, and the founder of the Extreme Individual Institute. He was born Alan Ronald Miller on July 12, 1943, and passed away on February 9, 2008. Hyatt was known for his works on self-improvement, psychology, and the Western esoteric tradition, with a particular focus on Thelema and the teachings of Aleister Crowley. His writings often explored themes of individual freedom, self-discovery, and the breaking of societal norms.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Christopher Hyatt was born in Chicago, Illinois. He pursued higher education in both psychology and human behavior, earning a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. His academic work laid the foundation for his later teachings and writings, which combined psychological insights with esoteric practices.
In the 1980s, Hyatt became associated with Israel Regardie, a fellow occultist and a former secretary to Aleister Crowley. Regardie became a mentor to Hyatt, influencing his work and thought profoundly. Together, they worked on several projects, including the publication of previously unreleased writings of Crowley and the development of modern Golden Dawn materials.
Hyatt's work was characterized by a direct and often confrontational style, aimed at encouraging readers to question societal norms and explore their own limits. He wrote and published numerous books, many under the Falcon Press, a publishing house he founded. His notable works include Undoing Yourself With Energized Meditation and Other Devices, The Psychopath's Bible, and Rebels & Devils: The Psychology of Liberation.
Philosophy and Teachings[edit | edit source]
Hyatt's philosophy was heavily influenced by Thelema, Chaos Magic, and Eastern mysticism. He advocated for a form of spiritual liberation that was achieved through intense personal work, often involving practices that challenged conventional moral and ethical boundaries. His teachings emphasized the importance of self-exploration, personal responsibility, and the dismantling of the ego.
One of Hyatt's key contributions to the occult and esoteric fields was his development of "Energized Meditation" techniques. These practices combined elements of yoga, pranayama (breath control), and chaos magic to help individuals break through psychological barriers and achieve states of heightened awareness.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Christopher Hyatt's work continues to influence students of the occult, psychology, and self-improvement. His books remain in print, and his teachings are discussed in various online forums and groups dedicated to esoteric studies. Hyatt's approach to spirituality and personal growth—uncompromising, direct, and often controversial—leaves a lasting impact on those who encounter his work.
