Chromium(III)

Chromium(III) is a chemical element with the symbol Cr and atomic number 24. It is the first element in Group 6. It is a steely-grey, lustrous, hard, and brittle transition metal. Chromium is also the main additive in stainless steel, to which it adds anti-corrosive properties.

Chromium(III) is known for its various states of oxidation. The most stable of these is the trivalent state, which forms various compounds including chromium(III) oxide. Chromium in this oxidation state is also a component of the glucose tolerance factor.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Chromium(III) is used in various applications, including in tanning processes for its ability to cross-link collagen, which stabilizes the leather by linking the collagen proteins and preventing them from becoming water-soluble.

Health Effects[edit | edit source]

Exposure to chromium(III) can have various health effects. It is an essential nutrient in trace amounts for the human body, but in larger amounts can be toxic or carcinogenic.
