Chronic gastritis
Chronic Gastritis is a medical condition characterized by long-term inflammation of the stomach lining. It is a common gastrointestinal disorder that can lead to various complications if not properly managed.
Causes[edit | edit source]
Chronic gastritis is typically caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, although it can also be caused by other factors such as long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), excessive alcohol consumption, and autoimmune disorders. In rare cases, chronic gastritis can be caused by bile reflux or various infectious agents other than H. pylori.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
The symptoms of chronic gastritis can vary greatly from person to person. Some individuals may be asymptomatic, while others may experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, and a feeling of fullness in the upper abdomen. In severe cases, chronic gastritis can lead to complications such as peptic ulcers and stomach cancer.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
The diagnosis of chronic gastritis is typically made based on a combination of clinical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests. These tests may include endoscopy, during which a thin tube with a camera is inserted through the mouth into the stomach, and biopsy, where a small sample of the stomach lining is taken for examination under a microscope.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
The treatment of chronic gastritis depends on the underlying cause. If H. pylori infection is the cause, a combination of antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors is typically used. If the gastritis is caused by NSAIDs or alcohol, these substances should be avoided. In cases of autoimmune gastritis, treatment may involve addressing the underlying autoimmune disorder and supplementing with vitamin B12 to prevent pernicious anemia.
