History[edit | edit source]

The Chuvash people are believed to be descendants of the Volga Bulgars, who settled in the region around the 7th century. Over time, they assimilated various cultural and linguistic influences, leading to the development of the distinct Chuvash identity.

Language[edit | edit source]

The Chuvash language is unique among the Turkic languages due to its significant differences in phonology, vocabulary, and grammar. It is written using the Cyrillic script and has several dialects. The language is taught in schools within the Chuvash Republic and is used in local media and literature.

Religion[edit | edit source]

Historically, the Chuvash people practiced Tengrism, a form of shamanism. However, with the spread of Christianity in the region, many Chuvash people converted to Eastern Orthodoxy. Today, the majority of Chuvash people are Russian Orthodox Christians, although some still practice traditional beliefs.
