- Cisco was founded in 1881 when the Texas and Pacific Railway laid tracks through the area. The city was named after John A. Cisco, a New York financier who helped fund the railroad. The city experienced a boom in the 1920s when oil was discovered in the area.

- Cisco is located in the western part of Eastland County. The city covers a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of it land.
