Cities in Russia
Cities in Russia are a significant part of the country's geography and culture. Russia, the largest country in the world by land area, is home to more than 1,100 cities. These cities vary greatly in terms of size, population, and historical significance. Some of the most well-known cities in Russia include Moscow, the capital and the largest city, and Saint Petersburg, the cultural capital.
Classification of Cities[edit | edit source]
In Russia, cities are classified into several categories based on their administrative status. The highest status is given to "Federal cities" (Federalnye goroda), which include Moscow and Saint Petersburg. These cities function as separate regions and are not part of any oblast or krai.
Other categories include "Administrative centers" (Administrativnye tsentry), which are the capitals of the federal subjects, and "Closed cities" (Zakrytye goroda), which are restricted due to their military or scientific significance.
