Clair Cameron Patterson

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Clair Cameron Patterson (June 2, 1922 – December 5, 1995) was an American geochemist who pioneered uranium-lead dating methods to determine the age of the Earth. He is best known for his work in environmental science, particularly his research on lead contamination in the environment.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Patterson was born in Mitchellville, Iowa, and attended Grinnell College where he received his bachelor's degree in chemistry. He went on to earn a master's degree from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, where he worked under the guidance of Harrison Brown.

Career and Research[edit | edit source]

Patterson joined the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) where he conducted groundbreaking research in geochemistry. His most notable achievement was the development of the uranium-lead dating method, which he used to calculate the age of the Earth as approximately 4.55 billion years.

Lead Contamination[edit | edit source]

Patterson's research extended beyond geochronology to address the issue of lead contamination in the environment. He discovered that industrial activities had significantly increased the levels of lead in the atmosphere and in human bodies. His work led to increased awareness and eventually to policy changes, such as the removal of lead from gasoline and paint.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Patterson's contributions to science and environmental policy have had a lasting impact. He was awarded the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement in recognition of his efforts to reduce lead pollution.
