Born on 10 April 1948 in Dublin, Ireland, Clare Boylan grew up in a literary household. She attended University College Dublin where she studied English and Spanish. Boylan later worked as a journalist and columnist for various publications, including The Irish Times and The Irish Press.

Boylan's literary career began with the publication of her first novel, Holy Pictures, in 1983. She went on to write several novels, short stories, and non-fiction works that explored themes such as family relationships, feminism, and Irish society.
