Clarion (heraldry) is a term used in heraldry to describe a specific type of charge that appears on coats of arms. It is less commonly found than many other charges, such as lions, eagles, or fleur-de-lis, and its representation can vary significantly between different heraldic traditions. The clarion is often associated with heraldic symbolism related to music, proclamation, and sometimes war.

Description[edit | edit source]

The clarion, also known as a rest or a claricorde, is traditionally depicted as a form of trumpet, but its shape is more stylized and less detailed than a naturalistic trumpet. In some heraldic traditions, the clarion is shown with a slightly curved body and flared ends, resembling a stylized letter 'S'. It may also be depicted with valves or keys, similar to a modern trumpet or cornet, but these details can vary. The clarion is usually oriented horizontally on the shield.

Symbolism[edit | edit source]

In heraldry, the clarion is often used to symbolize the heraldic virtues of clarity, proclamation, and alertness. It may also represent the bearer's involvement in military signaling, music, or both. The use of musical instruments in heraldry, including the clarion, can indicate a connection to royal or noble status, as music has historically been a luxury associated with courts and high social standing.

Variations[edit | edit source]

The appearance of the clarion can differ significantly across different heraldic traditions. In some cases, it is depicted in a more simplified form, focusing on the symbolic essence of the instrument rather than detailed accuracy. The color (tincture) and position (attitude) of the clarion on the shield can also vary, with each variation potentially carrying its own specific meaning or family association.

Examples[edit | edit source]

While specific examples of coats of arms featuring the clarion are less common than those with more familiar charges, the clarion can occasionally be found in the arms of families with historical connections to music or military signaling. Due to its rarity and the variability in its depiction, the clarion can serve as a distinctive and personal symbol for the armiger (the person or entity bearing the coat of arms).
