Closvougeot

Clos de Vougeot is a vineyard in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, France. It is one of the most famous Grand Cru vineyards in the region and is known for producing high-quality Pinot Noir wines. The vineyard is located in the commune of Vougeot, which is situated between the villages of Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Echézeaux.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of Clos de Vougeot dates back to the 12th century when it was established by the Cistercian monks of the Abbey of Cîteaux. The monks built a wall around the vineyard, which is where the name "Clos" (meaning enclosed) comes from. The vineyard remained under the control of the Cistercian monks until the French Revolution, after which it was sold off as national property.

Geography and Terroir[edit | edit source]

Clos de Vougeot covers an area of approximately 50 hectares (124 acres). The vineyard is divided among multiple owners, each producing their own wine under the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru appellation. The terroir of Clos de Vougeot is characterized by its limestone-rich soil, which contributes to the complexity and elegance of the wines produced here. The vineyard is situated on a gentle slope, providing excellent drainage and exposure to sunlight.

Wine[edit | edit source]

The wines of Clos de Vougeot are made primarily from the Pinot Noir grape variety. These wines are known for their deep color, rich flavors, and aging potential. They often exhibit aromas of red and black fruits, earth, and spices. The quality of the wines can vary depending on the specific plot within the vineyard and the winemaking practices of the producer.

Notable Producers[edit | edit source]

Some of the notable producers of Clos de Vougeot wines include:

Visiting[edit | edit source]

The Château du Clos de Vougeot, located within the vineyard, is a historic building that dates back to the 12th century. It serves as the headquarters of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, a prestigious wine fraternity. The château is open to visitors and offers tours and tastings.
