Cocke County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 35,662. Its county seat is Newport. The county was established in 1797 and named for William Cocke, one of the state's first U.S. Senators.

Cocke County was created in 1797 from a part of Jefferson County. The county was named in honor of William Cocke, a Revolutionary War veteran and one of the first U.S. Senators from Tennessee. The area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee people before European settlers arrived.
Geography[edit | edit source]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 443 square miles (1,150 km²), of which 435 square miles (1,130 km²) is land and 8.0 square miles (21 km²) (1.8%) is water. The county is located within the Great Smoky Mountains and is part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

As of the 2020 census, there were 35,662 people, 14,000 households, and 9,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 82 people per square mile (32/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of African American, Native American, and other races.

The economy of Cocke County is diverse, with significant contributions from agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. The presence of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park attracts numerous visitors each year, boosting the local economy.
