Cocktail Strainer

A cocktail strainer is a metal bar accessory used to remove solid residues from drink mixtures, typically ice or fruit pieces, allowing for a smoother cocktail. The use of a cocktail strainer ensures that the final drink is free from unwanted solid particles, enhancing the overall drinking experience.

Types of Cocktail Strainers[edit | edit source]

There are three main types of cocktail strainers: the Hawthorne strainer, the Julep strainer, and the fine strainer.

Hawthorne Strainer[edit | edit source]

The Hawthorne strainer is the most common type of cocktail strainer. It is characterized by its metal body with a large, flat disc attached to a coiled spring. The spring traps large chunks of ice and fruit, while the liquid passes through.

Julep Strainer[edit | edit source]

The Julep strainer is a perforated, spoon-shaped strainer. It is typically used with a mixing glass and is ideal for stirred cocktails. The Julep strainer is held in place with the palm while pouring the cocktail into a glass.

Fine Strainer[edit | edit source]

The fine strainer, also known as a tea strainer, is used in conjunction with either a Hawthorne or Julep strainer. It is used to catch smaller particles that the other strainers may miss, such as tiny ice shards or bits of herbs.

Usage[edit | edit source]

The usage of a cocktail strainer depends on the type of cocktail being made and the bartender's preference. Generally, the strainer is placed over the top of a shaker or mixing glass, and the cocktail is poured through it into the serving glass. The strainer catches any solid particles, allowing only the liquid to pass through.

History[edit | edit source]

The cocktail strainer has been a staple in the bartending world since the late 19th century. Its invention is attributed to the rise in popularity of cocktails, which often required the mixing of various ingredients.
