Cold chisel
Cold Chisel is an iconic rock band from Australia, known for their powerful live performances and a string of successful albums and singles throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The band's music blends a variety of genres, including rock, blues, and pub rock, making them a significant part of the Australian music scene and culture.
History[edit | edit source]
Cold Chisel formed in Adelaide in 1973. The original lineup consisted of Jimmy Barnes (lead vocals), Ian Moss (guitar, vocals), Don Walker (keyboards, songwriting), Phil Small (bass guitar), and Steve Prestwich (drums). The band quickly gained a reputation for their energetic live shows, which helped them build a loyal following.
Their debut album, Cold Chisel, was released in 1978 but it was their second album, Breakfast at Sweethearts, that began to earn them national recognition. However, it was the release of East in 1980 that catapulted them to national stardom, featuring hits such as "Cheap Wine" and "Choirgirl".
Throughout the early 1980s, Cold Chisel continued to release successful albums, including Circus Animals, which featured the iconic song "Forever Now". Despite their success, internal tensions and the pressures of touring led to the band's breakup in 1983.
After a period of solo projects and other musical endeavors, Cold Chisel reunited several times for tours and new music releases. Their legacy in the Australian music industry is significant, influencing many bands and artists that followed.
Musical Style and Influence[edit | edit source]
Cold Chisel's music is characterized by its blend of rock, blues, and pub rock. The band's lyrics often explore themes of love, life, and the Australian experience, resonating with a wide audience. Their sound is marked by Barnes' distinctive, raspy vocals and Moss' skilled guitar work, underpinned by Walker's songwriting.
The band has been cited as an influence by a number of Australian and international artists, and their songs continue to be popular on radio and at live venues across Australia.

Cold Chisel is considered one of Australia's most beloved bands. They were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1993, recognizing their contribution to the Australian music scene.
