Colomé is a winery located in the Calchaquí Valley in the Salta Province of Argentina. It is renowned for being one of the highest vineyards in the world, with some of its vines planted at an altitude of over 3,000 meters (9,842 feet) above sea level. The winery is known for producing high-quality Malbec and Torrontés wines.

History[edit | edit source]

The Colomé winery was established in 1831 by the Spanish governor of Salta, Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi y Echalar. It is one of the oldest working wineries in Argentina. The estate was later acquired by the Hess Family Estates in 2001, which has since invested in modernizing the winery and expanding its vineyards.

Vineyards[edit | edit source]

Colomé's vineyards are situated in the Calchaquí Valley, which is known for its unique terroir. The high altitude, combined with the region's dry climate and significant temperature variations between day and night, creates ideal conditions for growing grapes. The winery has several vineyard sites, including the famous Altura Máxima vineyard, which is one of the highest in the world.

Wines[edit | edit source]

Colomé produces a variety of wines, with a focus on Malbec and Torrontés. The winery's flagship wine is the Colomé Estate Malbec, which is made from grapes grown in the high-altitude vineyards. Other notable wines include the Colomé Auténtico Malbec, which is made using traditional winemaking methods, and the Colomé Torrontés, which is a crisp and aromatic white wine.

Tourism[edit | edit source]

The Colomé winery is a popular destination for wine tourism. Visitors can tour the vineyards and winery, taste the wines, and learn about the winemaking process. The estate also features a luxury hotel and a museum dedicated to the works of the American artist James Turrell.
