Colonia Department
Colonia Department is a department of Uruguay located in the southwestern part of the country. It is bordered by Rio de la Plata to the west, San Jose Department to the east, and Soriano Department to the north. The capital of Colonia Department is Colonia del Sacramento, one of the oldest towns in Uruguay and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Colonia Department was founded in 1816, shortly after Uruguay gained independence from Spain. The department is named after its capital, Colonia del Sacramento, which was established by the Portuguese in 1680 as a stronghold against the Spanish. The town's rich history is evident in its well-preserved colonial architecture and cobblestone streets.

Colonia Department covers an area of 6,106 square kilometers, making it the ninth largest department in Uruguay. The department's western border is formed by the Rio de la Plata, the widest river in the world.
