Computational engineering

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Computational Engineering is a discipline that deals with the development and application of computational models and simulations, often coupled with high-performance computing, to solve complex physical problems arising in engineering analysis and design (as well as natural phenomena). Computational engineering is widely used in various fields such as aerospace engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, bioengineering, and computer science.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Computational engineering encompasses numerical methods, such as finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and multibody dynamics, as well as analytical methods, such as symbolic computation. It also includes the development of algorithms, computational interfaces, and visualization tools.

Numerical Methods[edit | edit source]

Numerical methods in computational engineering are used to approximate solutions to mathematical models that cannot be solved exactly. These methods include finite element analysis, which is used to solve problems in structural mechanics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics; and computational fluid dynamics, which is used to simulate fluid flow.

Analytical Methods[edit | edit source]

Analytical methods in computational engineering involve the use of symbolic computation to solve mathematical models exactly. These methods are often used in conjunction with numerical methods to provide a more complete understanding of the problem at hand.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Computational engineering is used in a wide range of applications. In aerospace engineering, it is used to simulate the behavior of aircraft and spacecraft under various conditions. In civil engineering, it is used to model the behavior of structures and materials under load. In mechanical engineering, it is used to analyze the performance of machines and mechanical systems. In electrical engineering, it is used to design and analyze electrical and electronic systems. In bioengineering, it is used to model biological systems and processes.
