Middle Nasal Concha

The Middle Nasal Concha is a part of the human anatomy specifically located within the nasal cavity. It is one of the three pairs of conchae in the nose, the others being the superior nasal concha and the inferior nasal concha. The middle nasal concha plays a significant role in the process of respiration and the sense of smell.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

Illustration of the Middle Nasal Concha

The middle nasal concha is a thin, spongy bone that extends horizontally along the lateral wall of the nasal cavity. It is located between the superior and inferior nasal conchae. The middle nasal concha is part of the ethmoid bone, which separates the nasal cavity from the brain.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of the middle nasal concha is to regulate the flow of air through the nasal cavity. The concha helps to increase the surface area of the nasal cavity, which aids in warming and humidifying the air before it reaches the lungs. It also helps to filter out dust and other particles from the inhaled air.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Abnormalities or injuries to the middle nasal concha can lead to various health issues, including nasal congestion, sinusitis, and sleep apnea. In some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to correct these conditions.
