Concord grapes
Concord grapes are a cultivar derived from the grape species Vitis labrusca (also called fox grape) which are used as table grapes, wine grapes and juice grapes. They are often used to make grape jelly, grape juice, grape pies, grape-flavored soft drinks, and candy. The grape is sometimes used to make wine, particularly sacramental wines, though it is not generally favored for that purpose due to its strong "foxy" (i.e. musty and pungent) flavor.
History[edit | edit source]
The Concord grape was developed in 1849 by Ephraim Wales Bull in Concord, Massachusetts. Bull planted seeds from wild Vitis labrusca and evaluated over 22,000 seedlings before finding what he considered the perfect grape, the original vine of which still grows at his former home. The grape was introduced to the public in 1853 and was soon being grown throughout the country.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Concord grapes are often recognized for their bluish-black color. They are a slip-skin variety, meaning that the skin is easily separated from the fruit. Concord grapes have large seeds and are highly aromatic. The Concord grape is a robust and hardy vine, which will thrive in a variety of soil types.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Concord grapes are used in a variety of products. They are used to produce grape juice, the most well-known brand being Welch's, which uses Concord grapes in many of its products. The grapes are also used to make jelly, most famously as the primary ingredient in Concord grape jelly. Concord grapes can also be used to make wine, and are used in some sacramental wines. However, their strong "foxy" flavor can be off-putting to some, and they are not typically used in fine winemaking.
Health benefits[edit | edit source]
Concord grapes may offer health benefits due to their high levels of antioxidants, including polyphenols and flavonoids. These compounds may help to prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer. However, more research is needed to confirm these potential health benefits.
