Congenital limb deficiency
Congenital Limb Deficiency is a condition present at birth where an infant is born with an incomplete or missing limb or limbs. The severity and nature of this condition can vary greatly, from the absence of a portion of a finger to the absence of entire arms or legs. This condition can affect one limb (monomelic), two limbs (bimelic), or multiple limbs (multimelic), and can impact the upper limbs, lower limbs, or both.

The exact causes of congenital limb deficiency are not always clear, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. These may include genetic mutations, exposure to certain drugs or chemicals during pregnancy, and certain medical conditions of the mother during pregnancy, such as diabetes or infection. Congenital limb deficiencies are classified based on the part of the limb that is affected. The main types include:
- Transverse deficiency - where the limb develops normally to a certain point, then stops. It appears as though the limb was amputated.
- Longitudinal deficiency - where a specific bone or part of the limb is partially or entirely missing. This can affect the fibula, tibia, radius, ulna, or the phalanges.

Diagnosis of congenital limb deficiency is often made through prenatal ultrasound, though the condition can also be diagnosed at birth. Further assessments may include X-rays and genetic testing to determine the cause and extent of the deficiency and to plan for treatment.

Treatment for congenital limb deficiency varies depending on the type and severity of the deficiency. Options may include:
- Prosthetics - Artificial limbs can help a child to perform daily activities and improve mobility.
- Orthotics - Devices that support or correct the function of a limb.
- Surgery - In some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to improve the function or appearance of the limb.
- Physical therapy and occupational therapy are also important parts of treatment, helping to improve strength and functionality.
