Connaught Laboratories was a Canadian company that played a significant role in the development and production of vaccines and other biological products. Founded in 1914 by John G. FitzGerald, the company was instrumental in the fight against infectious diseases in the 20th century.

History[edit | edit source]

Connaught Laboratories was established as part of the University of Toronto's School of Hygiene with the aim of producing diphtheria antitoxin. The laboratory was named after the Duke of Connaught, who was the Governor General of Canada at the time.

In the 1920s, Connaught Laboratories became involved in the production of insulin, following the discovery of the hormone by Frederick Banting and Charles Best. This marked the beginning of the laboratory's expansion into other areas of biomedical research and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Contributions to Public Health[edit | edit source]

Connaught Laboratories made significant contributions to public health, particularly in the development and distribution of vaccines. The laboratory was involved in the production of the polio vaccine developed by Jonas Salk, which was a major breakthrough in the fight against poliomyelitis.

The company also played a key role in the development of the measles vaccine, and it was involved in the production of vaccines for tetanus, pertussis, and influenza.

Acquisition by Sanofi[edit | edit source]

In the late 20th century, Connaught Laboratories was acquired by the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi. This acquisition allowed Sanofi to expand its vaccine production capabilities and continue the legacy of Connaught Laboratories in the field of immunization.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The legacy of Connaught Laboratories is evident in its contributions to the development of life-saving vaccines and its impact on global public health. The laboratory's work has helped to control and eradicate infectious diseases, improving the quality of life for millions of people worldwide.
