Conroe

Conroe is a city located in Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Montgomery County and is situated about 40 miles north of Houston. The city is named after Isaac Conroe, a Northern-born Union Cavalry officer and local lumberman.

Conroe was founded in the 1880s by Isaac Conroe, who started a sawmill there in 1881. The city originally gained in wealth due to the lumber and oil industries. Initially, after oil was discovered in the area, Conroe boasted more millionaires per capita than any other U.S. city; however, the subsequent downturn in the oil market caused a significant economic contraction.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Conroe is located at the southeastern corner of the Piney Woods. The city is surrounded by wooded areas, lakes, and rivers. The largest and most notable of these is Lake Conroe, a popular spot for boating, fishing, and other recreational activities.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Conroe is diverse, with a strong presence in the healthcare, education, construction, and manufacturing sectors. The city is home to several major employers, including the Conroe Independent School District, Montgomery County, and the Memorial Hermann Hospital.

The city is served by the Conroe Independent School District. Higher education is provided by the Lone Star College System, which has a campus in Conroe.

Conroe is known for its vibrant arts scene, with numerous galleries, theaters, and a thriving community of artists. The city also hosts several annual events and festivals, such as the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival and the Sounds of Texas Music Series.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Conroe is served by the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston and the Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport. The city also has a comprehensive road network, with easy access to Interstate 45 and Texas State Highway 105.
