Contratto
Italian winery
Contratto is a historic winery located in the Piedmont region of Italy, renowned for its production of sparkling wine. Established in 1867, Contratto is one of the oldest producers of Metodo Classico sparkling wines in Italy. The winery is situated in the town of Canelli, which is part of the Province of Asti.
History[edit | edit source]
Contratto was founded by Giuseppe Contratto, who began producing sparkling wines using the traditional Champagne method. The winery quickly gained a reputation for quality and became a supplier to the Vatican and the Italian royal family. In the early 20th century, Contratto expanded its production to include a variety of wines and vermouth.
In 1993, the winery was purchased by the Boglietti family, who continued to uphold the traditions of quality and craftsmanship. In 2011, Contratto was acquired by the Rivetti family, owners of the La Spinetta winery, who have since revitalized the brand and expanded its international presence.
Production[edit | edit source]
Contratto is known for its meticulous production process, which adheres to the traditional methods of sparkling wine production. The winery uses Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, which are harvested from vineyards in the Langhe and Monferrato regions. The wines undergo a secondary fermentation in the bottle, a process that is essential for creating the fine bubbles characteristic of high-quality sparkling wines.
The winery's cellars, which are carved into the tuff rock beneath Canelli, provide the ideal conditions for aging. These historic cellars are part of the "Underground Cathedrals," a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Products[edit | edit source]
Contratto produces a range of sparkling wines, including the prestigious Contratto Millesimato and Contratto For England, a wine originally created for the British market. The winery also produces a selection of still wines and vermouth, which have gained popularity for their unique flavors and high quality.
Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]
Contratto has played a significant role in the history of Italian sparkling wine. Its iconic advertising posters, such as those designed by Leonetto Cappiello, have become symbols of Italian style and elegance. The winery's commitment to quality and tradition has made it a respected name in the world of wine.
