Corex

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Corex is a cough syrup that is widely used in the medical field. It is a combination of Chlorpheniramine Maleate and Codeine Phosphate, which are both effective in treating symptoms of cold, allergies, and cough.

Composition[edit | edit source]

Corex is composed of two main active ingredients: Chlorpheniramine Maleate and Codeine Phosphate.

  • Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antihistamine that is used to relieve symptoms of allergies such as runny nose, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes. It works by blocking a certain natural substance (histamine) that your body makes during an allergic reaction.
  • Codeine Phosphate is a narcotic cough suppressant (antitussive) that affects a certain part of the brain, reducing the urge to cough. It is used to suppress a dry, irritating, nonproductive cough.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Corex is primarily used to treat symptoms of a cold, allergies, and cough. It can also be used for other conditions as determined by a healthcare professional.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like all medicines, Corex can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Some common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, stomach upset, blurred vision, or dry mouth/nose/throat.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before using Corex, inform your doctor about your current list of medications, over the counter products, allergies, pre-existing diseases, and current health conditions. Some health conditions may make you more susceptible to the side effects of the drug.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects. Keep a list of all the products you use and share it with your doctor and pharmacist.

Overdose[edit | edit source]

If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call emergency services immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: severe drowsiness, slow/shallow breathing, slow heartbeat, coma.

Storage[edit | edit source]

Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets.
