Legend[edit | edit source]

According to the Historia Regum Britanniae (History of the Kings of Britain) written by Geoffrey of Monmouth in the 12th century, Corineus was one of the Trojan warriors who accompanied Brutus on his journey to Britain. After the Trojans defeated the giants who inhabited the land, Brutus divided the conquered territory among his followers. Corineus was granted the southwestern part of the island, which later became known as Cornwall.

Role in the Founding of Cornwall[edit | edit source]

Corineus is said to have engaged in a fierce battle with the giant leader, Gogmagog, near what is now known as Plymouth. The battle lasted for days, but Corineus eventually emerged victorious by throwing Gogmagog off a cliff into the sea. This victory solidified Corineus' reputation as a mighty warrior and secured his claim to the land.
