Corsi–Rosenthal Box
A DIY air filtration device
The Corsi–Rosenthal Box is a do-it-yourself air filtration device designed to improve indoor air quality by reducing airborne particles, including aerosols that may contain viruses such as SARS-CoV-2. It is named after its creators, Richard Corsi and Jim Rosenthal, who developed the concept during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Design and Function[edit | edit source]
The Corsi–Rosenthal Box is constructed using a simple and cost-effective design. It typically consists of four or five MERV-13 or higher rated air filters arranged in a cube or rectangular shape, with a box fan placed on top. The fan draws air through the filters, capturing particles and improving air quality in the surrounding environment.
The design is intended to be accessible and affordable, allowing individuals to construct their own air purifiers using readily available materials. The use of high-efficiency filters ensures that a significant portion of airborne particles, including dust, pollen, and microorganisms, are removed from the air.
Construction[edit | edit source]
To build a Corsi–Rosenthal Box, the following materials are typically required:
- Four or five MERV-13 or higher air filters
- A standard box fan
- Duct tape or other adhesive materials
- Cardboard or other materials for structural support
The filters are arranged in a square or rectangular configuration, with the fan placed on top to draw air through the filters. The edges are sealed with duct tape to ensure that air passes through the filters rather than around them. Additional support can be provided using cardboard or other materials to maintain the shape and stability of the box.
Applications[edit | edit source]
The Corsi–Rosenthal Box is used in various settings to improve indoor air quality, particularly in response to concerns about airborne transmission of viruses. It has been employed in homes, schools, and workplaces as a low-cost alternative to commercial air purifiers. The device is particularly useful in situations where ventilation is limited or where additional air filtration is desired.
Benefits[edit | edit source]
The primary benefits of the Corsi–Rosenthal Box include its affordability, ease of construction, and effectiveness in reducing airborne particles. By using high-efficiency filters, the device can capture a wide range of particles, including those that may carry viruses. This makes it a valuable tool for improving indoor air quality and reducing the risk of airborne transmission of infectious diseases.
Limitations[edit | edit source]
While the Corsi–Rosenthal Box is effective in many situations, it does have limitations. The performance of the device depends on the quality of the filters used and the size of the space being filtered. Additionally, the noise generated by the box fan may be a consideration in some environments. Regular maintenance, such as replacing filters, is necessary to ensure continued effectiveness.
