Council is a term that refers to a group of people who come together to consult, deliberate, or make decisions. A council may function as a deliberative assembly of one or more people, a special task force, board, commission, committee, etc., that is constituted by an individual or individuals who have authority and for a specific purpose.

A council is a group of people who are chosen to make rules, laws, or decisions, or to give advice on a particular subject, to represent a particular group of people, or to run a particular organization. The term is derived from the Old French conseil, which means "consultation, advice, counsel, deliberation, judgment".

There are various types of councils in different fields and sectors. Some of them include:

  • City Council: A legislative body that governs a city, town, municipality, or local government area.
  • Student Council: A representative structure for students only, where they can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management, staff, and parents for the benefit of the school and its students.
  • Council of Ministers: The name given to the supreme executive organ in some governments.
  • Security Council: One of the six main organs of the United Nations, charged with ensuring international peace and security, accepting new members to the United Nations, and approving any changes to its charter.
