Coverdale (dale)
Coverdale is a dale or valley in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, located in North Yorkshire, England. The dale is named after the River Cover, a tributary of the River Ure, which flows through the valley. Coverdale is one of the lesser-known dales, compared to its more famous neighbours, Wensleydale and Wharfedale.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Coverdale stretches approximately 20 miles from the eastern slopes of Penhill to the confluence of the River Cover and River Ure near the village of Coverham. The dale is characterised by its steep, rolling hills, lush pastures, and a scattering of traditional Yorkshire Dales farms and hamlets.
History[edit | edit source]
Coverdale has a rich history dating back to the Roman times, with several Roman roads and settlements discovered in the area. The dale was part of the ancient Kingdom of Northumbria until the Norman Conquest, after which it was granted to the Earl of Richmond.
In the Middle Ages, Coverdale was known for its monastic granges, operated by the monks of Jervaulx Abbey. The ruins of the abbey, located near the village of East Witton, are a popular tourist attraction today.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Coverdale is primarily based on agriculture, with sheep and cattle farming being the main activities. The dale is also known for its cheese production, particularly the famous Wensleydale cheese, which is produced in the nearby Wensleydale.
Tourism also plays a significant role in the local economy, with visitors attracted to the area's natural beauty, historical sites, and outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and fishing.
Flora and Fauna[edit | edit source]
Coverdale is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The dale's vegetation is dominated by grassland and heather moorland, with patches of woodland mainly consisting of ash, oak, and birch. The area is also rich in wildlife, including species such as the red squirrel, otter, and a variety of birds like the curlew and lapwing.
