Intertrochanteric crest
(Redirected from Crista intertrochanterica)
Intertrochanteric crest is a bony ridge located on the posterior side of the femur, between the greater trochanter and the lesser trochanter. It is a part of the skeletal system and plays a crucial role in the attachment of muscles and ligaments.
Etymology[edit | edit source]
The term "intertrochanteric crest" is derived from the Latin words "inter", meaning between, and "trochanter", referring to the two bony prominences on the femur. The "crest" refers to the ridge-like structure that connects these two points.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The intertrochanteric crest is a prominent bony ridge that runs obliquely downward and medially on the posterior aspect of the upper part of the femur. It connects the greater trochanter at the top with the lesser trochanter at the bottom. The crest serves as the point of attachment for several muscles and ligaments, including the quadratus femoris and the iliopsoas.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
Due to its location and role in muscle attachment, the intertrochanteric crest can be involved in various medical conditions and injuries. Fractures of the intertrochanteric crest are common in older adults, especially those with osteoporosis. These fractures often result from a fall and can lead to significant pain and disability. Treatment typically involves surgery to repair the fracture and physical therapy to restore function.
Related Terms[edit | edit source]
- Greater trochanter: The large, palpable bony prominence located at the lateral aspect of the upper femur.
- Lesser trochanter: The smaller, less palpable bony prominence located at the medial aspect of the upper femur.
- Quadratus femoris: A flat, quadrilateral skeletal muscle located on the posterior hip joint.
- Iliopsoas: A large muscle group consisting of the iliacus and psoas major muscles, which is responsible for flexing the hip.
