Crooks is a city in Minnehaha County, in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The population was 1,277 at the 2020 census.

Crooks was platted in 1904. The city was named for W. A. Crooks, a local politician. A post office has been in operation in Crooks since 1904.

. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.99 square miles (2.56 km²), all land.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the census of 2020, there were 1,277 people, 450 households, and 350 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,289.9 inhabitants per square mile (498.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.5% White, 0.3% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.5% Asian, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.

The economy of Crooks is primarily based on agriculture and small businesses. The city serves as a bedroom community for the nearby city of Sioux Falls.

Crooks is served by the Tri-Valley School District, which provides education for students in the area.
