Crystal

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Crystal is a solid material whose atoms are arranged in a highly ordered, repeating pattern extending in all three spatial dimensions. In medicine, the term "crystal" is often used to refer to solid substances that form in the body and can cause various health problems.

Types of Crystals in Medicine[edit | edit source]

Kidney Stones[edit | edit source]

Kidney stones are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys. They have many causes and can affect any part of your urinary tract.

Gout[edit | edit source]

Gout is a common and complex form of arthritis that can affect anyone. It's characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness and tenderness in the joints, often the joint at the base of the big toe. It is caused by the formation of urate crystals in the joint, causing inflammation and intense pain.

Cholesterol Crystals[edit | edit source]

Cholesterol crystals are formed when there is an excess of cholesterol in the body. These crystals can lead to atherosclerosis, a disease in which plaque builds up inside your arteries.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of crystal-related diseases often involves blood tests, urine tests, and imaging tests such as X-rays, CT scans, and ultrasounds. In some cases, a doctor may need to perform a joint fluid test or a kidney function test.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for crystal-related diseases varies depending on the type of crystal and the severity of the symptoms. Treatment options may include medication, lifestyle changes, or in severe cases, surgery.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Prevention strategies for crystal-related diseases often involve diet and lifestyle changes. Drinking plenty of water, reducing intake of foods high in purines (for gout), and maintaining a healthy weight can all help prevent the formation of crystals in the body.
