Cuban National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX) is a government-funded institution in Cuba dedicated to the research, teaching, and advocacy of sexual health and sex education. Established in 1989, CENESEX has played a pivotal role in shaping the country's approach to sexuality, gender identity, and sexual rights, under the direction of Mariela Castro, daughter of former Cuban president Raúl Castro.

History[edit | edit source]

CENESEX was founded with the aim of contributing to the comprehensive education of sexuality and promoting sexual health across the Cuban population. Since its inception, the center has been at the forefront of advocating for LGBTQ+ rights in Cuba, a significant shift from the earlier periods of the Cuban Revolution when homosexuality was persecuted and marginalized.

Objectives and Activities[edit | edit source]

The main objectives of CENESEX include the promotion of tolerance and the inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals in Cuban society. The center organizes educational campaigns, conducts research, and provides direct health services related to sexuality and reproductive health. One of its most notable campaigns is against homophobia and transphobia, which includes the annual Cuban Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

CENESEX also advocates for legal reforms to advance LGBTQ+ rights, including the recognition of same-sex marriage and the rights of transgender individuals to legally change their gender without undergoing surgery. The center's efforts have contributed to significant legal and societal changes in Cuba, including the amendment of the Cuban Family Code to better protect LGBTQ+ rights.

Criticism and Controversy[edit | edit source]

Despite its achievements, CENESEX has faced criticism from both within Cuba and internationally. Some critics argue that the center's progress is slow and that it operates within the constraints of the Cuban government's authoritarian regime, limiting its ability to effect change. Others praise CENESEX for its groundbreaking work in a traditionally conservative society.
