Cuthbert Dukes
Cuthbert Dukes (1890–1977) was a British pathologist known for his work in the field of colorectal cancer. His staging system for colorectal cancer, known as the Dukes classification, is still widely used today.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Cuthbert Dukes was born in 1890 in England. He received his medical education at King's College in London, where he developed an interest in pathology.
Career[edit | edit source]
After completing his education, Dukes worked at the London Hospital Medical College, where he specialized in the study of cancer. His work led to the development of the Dukes classification, a system for staging colorectal cancer based on the extent of tumor spread. This system, which he first proposed in 1932, has been modified over the years but remains a cornerstone of colorectal cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Dukes also contributed to the understanding of other types of cancer, including stomach cancer and pancreatic cancer. He published numerous scientific papers and was a respected figure in the field of pathology.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Cuthbert Dukes' contributions to the field of pathology, particularly in the area of colorectal cancer, have had a lasting impact. The Dukes classification system is still widely used in clinical practice and research, and his work has informed the development of subsequent staging systems.
