DDX53[edit | edit source]

DDX53, also known as DEAD-box helicase 53, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the DDX53 gene. This protein belongs to the DEAD-box family of RNA helicases, which are characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD).

Function[edit | edit source]

DDX53 is a member of the DEAD box protein family. DEAD box proteins, characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD), are putative RNA helicases. They are implicated in a number of cellular processes involving alteration of RNA secondary structure such as translation initiation, nuclear and mitochondrial splicing, and ribosome and spliceosome assembly.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

DDX53 has been identified as a potential biomarker for cancer, particularly in the diagnosis and prognosis of colorectal cancer. Studies have shown that the overexpression of DDX53 is associated with poor prognosis in colorectal cancer patients.
