Da-Wen Sun was born in China. He pursued his undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering at Xuzhou University of Technology. He later obtained his Master's degree in thermal engineering from Southeast University. Da-Wen Sun completed his Ph.D. in chemical engineering at Dalian University of Technology.

Da-Wen Sun began his academic career as a lecturer at Dalian University of Technology. He later moved to University College Dublin (UCD) in Ireland, where he currently holds the position of Professor of Food and Biosystems Engineering.
